DriveCleaner is promoted on its homepages as an internet tracks remover. DriveCleaner is actually a rogue program (aka badware) that uses unethical tactics to scare internet users into buying their product.
DriveCleaner uses a Trojan horse to download and install an adware program without the user's knowledge and permission. This adware program then proceeds to display an alert message that prompts the user to download DriveCleaner. This may look like a legitamate alert message to the casual user but it is really just a ploy to pursuade the user to buy the commercial version of DriveCleaner. Typical alert message wording: "NOTICE: Your computer has tracks of all adult sites you had visited....Would you like to install DriveCleaner to check you computer for free?"
DriveCleaner FAKE Alert Message
DriveCleaner Trojans usually get installed as a result of visiting unethical websites and clicking on a popup or by a drive-by-download. It's very important to get rid these Trojans because they provide access to your computer to download other malicious programs, not just DriveCleaner.
Remove DriveCleaner and its Trojans
To permanently remove DriveCleaner and/or its fake alert messages, the associated trojan horses must also be completely removed. If the trojan horses are not properly removed then DriveCleaner may be downloaded and re-installed later on. We recommend using a good anti-spyware program such as STOPzilla to safely uninstall DriveCleaner and the associated trojans. Your first step should be to look for DriveCleaner in your Windows Add/Remove Programs utility and remove it from there if found. Your secound step is to run a complete scan with STOPzilla and remove all infections detected, whether or not your Add/Remove Programs utility was able to remove it. This will ensure all hidden components have been found and deleted.
As soon as you've removed all programs detected by STOPzilla, reboot your system and re-scan in case the Trojan was able to re-install itself. If you have any further problems with DriveCleaner removal please contact us for personal assistance.
